Thinking of going to Malaysia by car? Did you know you’ll need a Vehicle Entry Permit RFID tag?

Starting October 1, 2024, all foreign-registered cars, including Singaporean ones, must have a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP), plus a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag.

Although this new requirement adds another layer of complexity for travelers, it also brings several benefits that should not be underestimated.

Thinking of going to Malaysia by car? Did you know that you’ll need a Vehicle Entry Permit RFID tag?

What is a VEP RFID Tag?

A Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) RFID tag is an electronic identification tag needed for foreign cars coming into Malaysia. It uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to store certain information electronically such as license plate number, type of vehicle, and origin. The tag is like a sticker stuck on the windshield that allows the car to get detected when entering Malaysia. When a vehicle zooms through a scanner, the RFID chip sends its info instantly.

The Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) RFID system is not a new system though; it has been in place since 2019 but truly began operating on October 1, 2024. Malaysian authorities wanted to test the system’s functionality, but the COVID-19 pandemic led to border closures and travel halts, and enforcing VEP wasn’t a priority. By 2024, it was the right moment to comply with this regulation. This delay ensured that everything was in order before moving forward.

Why Do You Need a VEP RFID Tag?

The VEP RFID tag will be a must-have starting in October 2024 for driving smoothly, safely, and legally in Malaysia. This system’s main advantages include:

  • Improves Traffic Management: The VEP helps the authorities monitor foreign cars, which means less chaos at border points.
  • Better Security and Safety: With the VEP, officials can address accidents or legal matters more efficiently.
  • Compliance with Local Rules: The VEP RFID tag ensures your car meets Malaysia’s traffic laws, insurance included.
  • Boosts Revenue Collection: Foreign cars pay road charges and tolls, which helps maintain Malaysian roads.

What Documents Do You Need to Apply For The VEP RFID Tag?

Here’s the personal details and vehicle info you’ll need to provide:

  • Vehicle Info (available on Singpass and OneMotoring website)
    • Vehicle’s model
    • Chassis numbers
    • Certificate of Entitlement (COE)
  • NRIC (National Registration Identity Card Number)
  • Passport
  • Vehicle road tax documents
  • Motor insurance documents

Quick Tip: If you have your vehicle log, you can speed the process up by uploading the PDF directly from the Land Transport Authority’s OneMotoring website.

How to Register for Your VEP Account

Setting up a VEP account is simpler than you think. You just have to follow these five steps. Here’s a brief tutorial on how to complete your VEP registration:

Step 1: Create Your JPJ Account

First, the vehicle owner makes an online account at Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) and fills out the vehicle and personal details accurately.

Quick Tip: You can get someone to apply for you.

Step 2: Confirm and Verify Your Info

Next, you’ll receive an email with a confirmation form. Double-check that all information is correct.

You will be redirected to the TCSENSE Portal. Log in using the same username and password and verify the details you submitted.

In case you spot a mistake, you can resend the correct info before moving forward. You can also download the form if you want.

Don’t forget to download the Touch N’ Go eWallet app before continuing to the next step. It’s necessary for the VEP as it lets you handle payments through the VEP-RFID tag. Once you’ve got your tag, just link it to your Touch N’ Go e-wallet, and you can pay for road charges, tolls, and more. It’s simple, straightforward, and saves time.

Quick Tip: The confirmation email may take days, or even weeks, so apply early!

Step 3: Pick Up or Receive Your VEP-RFID Tag

Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) will send you an email with the details on where and when to collect your VEP-RFID tag.

If you decide to head to Johor for a self-collection, bring your confirmation form and the other required papers to the RTD collection counters for verification. It’ll cost you RM10 (S$2.87) to receive your RFID tag, which is valid for 5 years. But if you want it delivered to your doorstep, it can cost 10 times the regular amount.

Step 4: Install Your VEP-RFID Tag

Pick a flat spot on your vehicle, and keep it at least 5cm from any metal. You might find the left headlamp on the passenger’s side works well, as well as the left side of the windscreen. Make sure it’s secure and away from any obstructions. It’s quite straightforward—just follow these steps and you’re good to go.

Quick Tip: Malaysian officers in Johor can help you install your tag.

Step 5: Verify and Activate Your VEP-RFID Tag

This step is critical to complete the process. Take a photo of the tag with the car’s license plate, and upload it to the TCSENSE Portal. Once you send it, you will receive an email in your inbox, saying the tag is activated.

Here are some important aspects to remember about VEP-RFID tags:

  • VEP-RFID Validity: VEP-RFID tags have a lifespan of five years from the day they are activated.
  • Selling Your Car: If you sell your car, the tag becomes invalid and you have to deregister it on the JPJ website.
  • Buying a Used Car: In the case you just bought a car and can’t reach the old owner, reach out to JPJ by email with the needed documents.
  • Switching Vehicles: If you switch to a different car, you will need to complete this above-mentioned process to obtain a new VEP-RFID tag.
